Feature walls are nothing new, but they always appear in imaginative places. Some would say that the pop color feature has become obsolete in recent years, but the latest (and very unexpected) location of the feature wall got us running to install one. Feature walls featuring showers can now be seen in bathrooms – and they’re probably just one of the most popular renovations of the season.
Bathrooms have proven to be one of the top places where homes sell faster, so it makes sense that homeowners around the world want to make a splash with this interior design detail. A feature wall allows you to elevate the value and beauty of one of the smallest rooms in your home without having to spend expensive marble tiles to renovate an entire bathroom.
Ultimately, shower feature walls mean better deals. Plus, this simple trick allows you to choose bright colors or bold patterns to show your personality without inconveniencing the whole room – a serendipitous opportunity in bathroom design.
This bathroom redesign trend is an excellent and affordable way to add unique features to your home. But does that mean it’s right for you? We spoke to an interior design expert about how to create a great feature wall. Plus, we offer ways you can implement it in any home, even if it’s a rental one! If this trend piques your interest, read on to find out how you can turn it into your own.
Just like personalizing ceilings, personalizing walls can transform a space without the need for major renovations, saving time and money when designing updates. This trend works well for homeowners looking for a unique upgrade (or a way to show off their personal style) without the hassle of redoing an entire bathroom.
“The shower feature wall is a wall in the shower room that has an eye-catching tile on it,” says Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors. “Tiles don’t even have to be loud and colorful – anything that has a big impact, like bold geometric shapes, or fun grout colors, can do that. ”
In the field of interior design, the current focus is on creating a home that reflects the people who live in it, even if it means abandoning traditional design choices. Minimalism is also in vogue, and shower feature walls pay homage to both trends with their playful pops of color and texture.
One of the great things about this trend is that it is suitable for almost any home due to its inherent flexibility and wide range of style options.
“While it’s particularly well-suited to more modern home design, there’s really no home style that can’t make a feature wall, as long as the materials are appropriate for your home’s architecture and era,” Adams says.
In a historic home, you may want to opt for beautiful subway tiles or chic travertine, while in a modern home, bold, deep-grained marble or modern-style materials with wild colors can create an updated look.
You can also easily push the boundaries of the personality wall, and if you prefer, make it a freestanding bathtub or shower. And you don’t have to take this trend too literally – if your bathtub is in an alcove, don’t be afraid to tile the entire tub! This is another great opportunity to add a little small but high-impact elevating design style.
If you’re renting or just aren’t sure if this look is right for you, you can still try this trend by using a less permanent app. While tiling may not be possible, some landlords are willing to let you paint the walls in the bathroom (although check with them first and be ready to repaint it!).
In addition, peel-and-stick wallpaper has a dramatic but temporary look. If you really don’t want anything with commitment, and if you think crisp white walls are more suited to your style, hanging oversized artwork on your bathtub can also give your bathroom a new look that you won’t regret.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with creating a feature wall in your bathroom – just have fun and let your personality shine through!
